  • OOPS, Been A while.

Since my last entry theres been good days and bad. Had a couple of 50lb bags of chub Bream and Barbel from the Ouse also had some hard days on the same venue.

Struggled today and just about scraped together ten pound of fish on the stick and still no sign of the elusive river carp since I last made a report. On the plus side, I fished a small lake last weekend and caught my first ever grass carp, only a tiddler of about 4lb but it's another species off the list.

Not much else of any note to report really, I'll try and keep the blog up to date from now on and get a few more pictures up. Fishing tomorrow so hopefully be something to report.

  • Great Ouse Again; 22-23June

Had a day on a different stretch of the ouse hoping to get amongst the skimmers and maybe a carp during the night.

Not much to say really other than the fishing was hard, had 65 fish on the pole for 11lb 9oz. And not so much as a beep on the alarms all night from the carp.

  • Back to the scene of the Blank. June 20/21

After a disasterous 16th I decided to fish the same swim but be fully prepared  this time. So arrived with enough  tackle and bait  to cover every situation.

The far bank looked perfect for running a float under the trees and along the bushes where I thought the chub should be but after two hours without so much as a nibble a change of tactics was called for.

Out came the feeder rod, 6lb  line, small black cap blockend, 4lb bottom and a size 18 hook with bronze maggot....second cast and the tip pulled round. Lifted into what felt like a good fish and it made a run to get under the tree so I already knew I was into a chub, managed to steer it away from the trees and bushes and into the safety of open water, apart from another lunge towards the nearside rushes it came in without too much of a fight and my first fish of the season was in the net. Not a bad one either at 4lb 10oz.

Had another 10 chub during the day all on the maggot feeder tried the float a few more times during the day but couldn't buy a bite, smallest was 3lb 8oz and the biggest went 4lb 12oz. 7 of the eleven went over 4lb.

Time was getting on and it would be getting dark in an hour or so....Bream time!

Out came the heavy duty feeder rods and the groundbait with a good helping of mixed pellets and casters, the bream don't usually switch on until dusk so made a few casts to get some bait down then give em a bit of time to find it and get munching.

Near enough the minute the isotopes started glowing in the darkness, the tip went round, something had found my banded 8mm pellet. The fight never lasted more than 30 seconds before the dogged resistence turned into more of a wet sack on the end of the line. First Bream of the night also turned out to be the biggest at 7lb 1oz.

Went on to net 4 more bream all over 6lb before tiredness set in at about 2am and I decided to call it a night.

Strange thing of the day was I never caught a single small fish, no bleak, perch, chublets, dace or roach, which there are normally plenty of.

Best thing of the day was that I roke my PB river weight by nearly 4lb, if I'd taken more RedBull I;m positive I'd have broke the 100lb barrier but certainly cant complain about 76lb 14oz.

Having a crack at the river carp tomorrow so another blank could be on the cards.

  • The Season Starts Here ! 16th June.

After what seemed a lot longer than 3 months, June the 16th finally came around.

In those 3 months much planning went into the annual opening session.....and within 3 minutes of getting to the river all that planning went out of the window due to some really really poor preperation.

In all the exitement and rush to get to the river [Great Ouse, Bedford] I managed to forget most of the stuff that I needed [worms, pellet bands, fags, grub & a coat]

I did have some boilies though so all was not lost, settled in a cracking looking swim that had produced a great days fishing at the back end of last season. This was only to be a short evening session due to work and having to be up early the next morning. Finally got set up and the first cast of a new season was made at around 6pm, PVA bag of broken boilies and pellets tight to the far bank and under an overhanging tree...perfect.

I sat and waited for the tip to pull round......any minute now.....still waiting......do these fish realise the seasons started..... obviously not.

Not a sniff after about 40 minutes so reeled in attatched another bag and chucked it back under the tree where I was convinced the chub should be. After a lot more waiting and staring at a lifeless quivertip I decided to make up another PVA bag and yes you guessed it, while I've got me hands full of PVA tube and scissors the rod tip belts round and springs back motionless before I can grab hold and strike.

By about half nine the temperature had dropped a fair bit and being the big tart that I am decided to call it a night.

Going to spend the next couple of days writing out a checklist and making sure everythings ready and in the bag for weekend session in the same place.

Hopefully next time I'll have some fish to tell you about and not just a tale of  my stupidity.
